When asked about her least favorite on-screen kiss, Sally hesitated before admitting it involved her former boyfriend and co-star Burt Reynolds. She recounted that during the filming of Smokey and the Bandit, she had to endure unwanted advances, which made the experience uncomfortable.
Andy Cohen pressed further, questioning whether Sally was dating Burt at the time. Sally explained that their relationship, which lasted about five years after meeting on the set in 1977, was strained by Burt’s behavior, leading her to distance herself from him in the last three decades of his life.
Burt Reynolds, who passed away from cardiac arrest at 82, mentioned his relationship with Sally in his memoir But Enough About Me, as reported by the New York Post. Sally expressed regret over their time together, wishing he had made more effort to sustain their relationship.
In a March interview with Variety, Sally elaborated on why she ceased communication with Burt Reynolds, citing his negative influence and inability to prioritize her well-being.
“He was not someone I could be around,” she explained. “He was just not good for me in any way. And he had somehow invented in his rethinking of everything that I was more important to him than he had thought, but I wasn’t. He just wanted to have the thing he didn’t have. I just didn’t want to deal with that.”
