Paper & Ribbon Planning Tools

Use these calculators to plan a starting cut for a rectangular gift box. The models are intentionally simple and their assumptions are visible. They do not replace a trial with the paper, ribbon, and box you actually have.

Before you enter measurements

Measure the box’s length, width, and height in one unit. Treat length as the axis running between the two ends you will close. The paper’s other dimension goes once around the width-and-height cross-section. Use the same interpretation in the calculator and on your sheet.

The unit selector converts the entered values between centimeters and inches. Small rounding differences may appear in the display. Calculations happen in your browser; there is no login, saved project history, or email submission.

Box wrapping paper calculator

A starting rectangle for a rectangular box: one dimension wraps around width and height; the other runs along its length. Test the folds with scrap before cutting your final sheet.

Model: around W/H = 2W + 2H + overlap; along L = L + H + 2 × end allowance. Centered overhang at each end = H/2 + end allowance.

Paper thickness, end folds, and tall narrow boxes can need a different allowance. This is a planning estimate, not a guaranteed minimum or a load-bearing package design. See how to measure wrapping paper.

Cross-wrap ribbon calculator

Estimate one continuous ribbon making one lengthwise loop and one widthwise loop around a rectangular box. Add your own allowance for the knot, bow, and tails.

Model: 2L + 2W + 4H + bow allowance. The default allowance is an example, not a universal bow size. Check the actual ribbon with a reusable length before cutting; support the gift from underneath. Read choosing ribbon length.

Worked paper example

For a box 20 cm long, 12 cm wide, and 6 cm high, a 2 cm main overlap gives 2 × 12 + 2 × 6 + 2 = 38 cm around the box. With 0.5 cm extra allowance at each end, the other dimension is 20 + 6 + 2 × 0.5 = 27 cm. Centering the box leaves 3.5 cm beyond each end. Try the end folds on scrap before deciding that 38 × 27 cm is right for your paper.

Worked ribbon example

The same box has a cross-wrap path of 2 × 20 + 2 × 12 + 4 × 6 = 88 cm. An illustrative 50 cm for the knot, bow, and tails produces 138 cm total. A different bow, ribbon width, or tying method can need more or less. Compare with a reusable length before cutting.

Choose the next step

Follow the rectangular-box wrapping guide for the sequence, or read a tie-based wrapping approach. The paper belly-band guide covers a separate removable decoration. Download matching tags from Printables and check their physical scale before using them.
